Understanding HS Codes for International Shipping from India

9 May 2026 6 min read

If you've ever filled out an international shipping label, you've seen the dreaded "HS Code" field. Most sellers either guess or copy whatever the previous shipment had — and that's the single biggest cause of customs delays. Let's fix that.

What is an HS Code?

HS (Harmonized System) codes are a globally standardised 6-digit product classification system maintained by the World Customs Organization. Every country adds its own additional digits — India uses 8 digits, the US uses 10, and the UK uses 10. The first 6 digits are universal.

Why HS Codes Matter

  • Customs duty calculation — wrong code = wrong duty, and revaluation delays
  • GST refund (RoDTEP, MEIS) — Indian export incentives use HS codes to determine eligibility
  • Restricted/prohibited check — some codes trigger inspection or license requirements
  • FTA benefits — Free Trade Agreement preferential rates are HS-code-specific

How to Find the Right HS Code

Three reliable sources:

  1. ICEGATE Indian Customs portalicegate.gov.in has a tariff lookup tool
  2. DGFT website — for export-incentive scheme alignment
  3. Destination country's customs site (US ITC, UK GOV) to confirm import duty

Common Mistakes

  • Using a 4-digit code (must be at least 6 digits)
  • Choosing the cheapest-duty code instead of the accurate one (customs caught this — penalty + delay)
  • One HS code for mixed shipments — every product needs its own code
